If your Frigidaire or Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator suddenly stopped cooling — but the lights still come on, the water dispenser still works, and the control panel looks completely normal — there’s a good chance it isn’t broken at all. It may be stuck in Demo Mode (also called Showroom Mode).
Demo Mode is a factory setting designed for retail floor displays. It keeps every light, button, and dispenser function working so customers can see the unit “in action,” but it disables the compressor so the appliance doesn’t run nonstop in a showroom. When it gets triggered accidentally in a home — usually during cleaning, a power blip, or a curious child holding buttons — the fridge looks fine but warms up over the next few hours. The freezer thaws, the ice maker melts, and water ends up on the floor from the dispenser chute. That’s almost always the first symptom homeowners notice.
How to tell if your fridge is in Demo Mode
Look at the control panel on the front of the fridge or dispenser. On most current Frigidaire and Frigidaire Gallery French door models, you’ll see a small blue “Demo” indicator lit on the display — usually tucked next to one of the temperature adjustment buttons, easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. If you see it, that’s your answer.
Other clues that point to Demo Mode rather than a real failure:
- Interior light works normally when you open the door
- Water and ice dispenser buttons respond and the panel beeps
- No unusual sounds — the compressor simply isn’t running
- The unit was working fine recently and there’s no other obvious cause
How to turn off Demo Mode on a Frigidaire refrigerator
On most French door models (including the GRFS2853 series and similar), the exit sequence is:
Press and hold the Freezer (+) button on the LEFT side of the dispenser panel and the Fresh Food (−) button on the RIGHT side at the same time for 10 seconds.
On this model, the left “+” is under the “Freeze Boost” label, and the right “−” is next to the “Demo” indicator (just above “Reset Air Filters”). You should hear a chime and see the “Demo” indicator turn off. The compressor will start within a few minutes. Give the fridge 4–6 hours to pull back down to safe temperatures before restocking food that was thawed.
The same button combination both turns Demo Mode on and off, which is why it gets triggered by accident more often than you’d expect.
When it’s not Demo Mode
If the Demo indicator isn’t lit and the fridge isn’t cooling, you’re likely looking at a real failure — commonly a bad evaporator fan, a failed start relay, a sealed-system issue, or a defrost problem. Those need hands-on diagnosis. Don’t keep food in a unit that’s been warm for more than a few hours; toss anything that climbed above 40°F for longer than two hours, especially meat and dairy.
