A customer on Euclid Avenue in Minerva called about two major appliance problems: a Samsung washer throwing an “uL” unbalanced load error on every cycle, and a Samsung dishwasher that was making grinding noises, then started squealing and smelling like smoke. We found failed internal components in both units that required replacement.
The Problem
The washing machine was giving an error message “uL” as saying that the load is out of balance, but it does this on every load that the customer tried to wash. They had maneuvered the clothes around in different positions, but no change. The dishwasher was making a really bad grinding noise when it was running, but the last time they ran it, it made a loud squeal noise and now smells as if it is smoking when it is running.
Diagnosis
The washer’s bearing assembly had failed, causing the drum to be unable to balance properly regardless of load arrangement. On the dishwasher, the circulation pump assembly had worn out, creating the grinding noises and eventually the burning smell from the motor overworking.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W10435302 bearing assembly (washer), DD94-01025A sump assembly (dishwasher)
- Work performed: Replaced the bearing assembly on the washer and the circulation pump assembly on the dishwasher
- Result: Both appliances returned to normal operation
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung appliances from this era generally hold their value well, and both bearing and pump replacements are substantial repairs that typically extend the life of the units significantly. These were major component replacements that address core mechanical failures, making them worthwhile investments for appliances that weren’t at end-of-life.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Washers and Dishwashers
- Run washer cleaning cycles monthly with Samsung-approved cleaners to prevent buildup that can stress bearings
- Check dishwasher filters regularly and clean debris that could damage the circulation pump
- Don’t overload either appliance — excess weight and poor water circulation lead to premature component failure
