A Samsung French door refrigerator at 1621 Schneider Street Northwest in North Canton was accumulating frost and ice in the bottom freezer compartment and leaking water on the right front side. This turned out to be a common Samsung defrost system issue requiring both hardware updates and critical programming changes.
The Problem
The customer reported accumulating frost and ice in freezer, with the freezer located on the bottom of the refrigerator. Water was also leaking on the right front side of the unit.
Diagnosis
We inspected and cleaned the seal, pulled out the unit, and removed the access plate to clean out dust before defrosting the freezer. The root cause was a plugged defrost drain in the freezer — a common issue with Samsung French door refrigerators. The factory defrost programming was also inadequate for proper operation.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: DA82-01415A — Water leakage assembly
- Work performed: Cleared the plugged defrost drain in the freezer and installed updated defrost drains heat probes in freezer and fridge compartments, plus updated drain lines
- Result: Most critically, we entered the programming and extended the defrost time to the enhanced defrost setting that Samsung doesn’t activate from the factory
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung French door refrigerators can be worth repairing if the enhanced defrost setting is available in the control programming. Without this programming option, repair attempts typically fail and the unit should be replaced. When the enhanced defrost mode is accessible, these units usually respond well to the hardware updates.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Refrigerators
- Check door seals monthly — Samsung French doors are prone to seal problems that worsen defrost issues
- Keep rear coils clean to reduce strain on the defrost system
- Don’t overpack the freezer, which can block air circulation and cause ice buildup
