A GE dishwasher in North Canton wouldn’t start — just beeping with an orange control lock light flashing. We found the CSM safety module had tripped after a transient overcurrent event, shutting down the entire unit as a protective measure.
The Problem
The customer reported their GE dishwasher (model GDT695SMJOES) was completely unresponsive. The control lock indicator was flashing orange and beeping continuously, but pressing any buttons had no effect. The unit wouldn’t start any wash cycle, leaving dishes piling up in the sink.
Diagnosis
The CSM (Control Safety Module) had tripped, which happens when the dishwasher detects an electrical anomaly like a brief power surge or overcurrent condition. This safety feature prevents damage to the main control board by cutting power to the wash system. We found no stored error codes and no signs of water leaks that might have caused the trip.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None — reset procedure only
- Work performed: Reset CSM safety module, cleaned dishwasher filter and sump area, verified float sensor operation
- Result: Unit started normally and completed a full test cycle without errors
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE model is well-built and this particular issue was a simple reset — no expensive parts needed. CSM trips are usually one-time events unless there’s an underlying electrical problem. At around 7-8 years old, this dishwasher should provide several more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for GE Dishwashers
- Clean the triple-filter system monthly — twist out the cylindrical filter and rinse under hot water
- Run GE’s Dishwasher Cleaner or white vinegar cycle monthly to prevent hard water buildup on the wash arms
- Keep the area around the float switch (front right corner of tub) clear of food debris to prevent false overfill signals
