We recently serviced a Whirlpool top-load washer in Magnolia, Ohio that wasn’t spinning water out of clothes properly. The homeowner reported that laundry was coming out soaking wet at the end of each cycle. Our diagnosis revealed a failed hub — the plastic component that connects the agitator to the transmission.
The Problem
The washer would fill, agitate, and drain normally, but clothes remained very wet after the spin cycle completed. This is a classic symptom of spin basket failure, typically caused by a broken hub that can no longer transfer power from the transmission to rotate the basket at high speed.
Diagnosis
We removed the agitator and found the hub (part W10528947) had cracked and stripped internally. This plastic component takes significant stress during spin cycles, and on this model it’s a known wear point after several years of use. When the hub fails, the spin basket can’t achieve the RPM needed to extract water from clothes.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W10528947 — hub assembly
- Work performed: Removed agitator, replaced failed hub, reassembled washer
- Result: Spin cycle now extracts water properly, clothes come out appropriately damp
Is It Worth Repairing?
The WTW5000DW2 is a solid mid-range Whirlpool that typically runs 10-12 years with proper maintenance. This hub replacement addresses the most common failure point on this model, and the rest of the machine was in good condition. For a washer this age, replacing the hub is usually the right call over buying new.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Top-Load Washers
- Don’t overload the basket — excess weight accelerates hub wear on WTW models
- Use HE detergent only; regular detergent creates excess suds that strain the drive system
- Run the Clean Washer cycle monthly to prevent residue buildup in the hub area
