LG Refrigerator Not Cooling: The Linear Compressor Problem Most Techs Miss

I’ve worked on LG refrigerators across Stark County since 2018 — French door bottom freezers are the dominant configuration around here. They share one recurring failure mode that almost every online guide gets wrong: the LG linear compressor and its internal reed valve.

The symptom looks like a compressor failure but doesn’t sound like one. The compressor runs. It sounds normal — maybe even quiet. There’s no clicking, no buzzing, no overheating compressor cabinet. The fridge just doesn’t cool. No error code on the display, either.

Most generic content tells you to listen for clicking or buzzing. On LG linear compressors, that’s the wrong test. The reed valve inside the compressor breaks and the compressor stops pumping refrigerant — but it keeps running because the motor itself is fine. Pressure-testing the system is the only way to confirm the diagnosis.

The LG Linear Compressor Reed Valve

LG linear compressors use a reed valve to control refrigerant flow on the compression stroke. When the reed valve fractures internally, the compressor cycles normally, draws normal current, and produces normal motor noise — but it can’t generate the pressure differential needed to move refrigerant through the sealed system.

From the outside, the platform behaves like it’s working. From the inside, it’s pumping air against itself.

This failure mode is the reason LG ran the well-publicized class-action settlement and extended the linear compressor warranty to 10 years on many platforms. If your LG fridge is under that 10-year window, the compressor itself is typically covered as a part directly through LG.

An important note on LG warranty work: Louisville Appliance Repair is not an LG factory-authorized servicer, which means I can’t process LG warranty claims for you. If your unit is in the warranty window, you’ll need to contact LG to get the compressor part covered. Once you have the compressor in hand from LG, I’ll install it and handle the system evacuation, vacuum, and recharge — at my standard labor rate. Call for a current quote; I don’t quote labor estimates on these in writing because the scope varies by platform.

The Most Common LG Refrigerator Failures (in order)

From field experience, this is roughly how LG refrigerator failures rank:

  1. Linear compressor / broken reed valve — the one above. Routinely misdiagnosed as a fan or defrost problem until pressure testing confirms otherwise.
  2. Ice maker module + water inlet valve failures — small or hollow cubes, no ice production, water dispenser issues. Filter is the first thing to replace (every six months). Inlet valve is the second.
  3. Freezer fan, fridge fan, or condenser fan motor failure — warm fridge, warm freezer, or compressor cycling without cooling. Manifests differently depending on which fan fails. Diagnosis is straightforward; replacement is usually same-visit.
  4. Refrigerant leaks — much less common than the reed valve issue but they do happen. Same pressure-testing diagnostic, but the fix is leak location and repair (often a Lokring joint or evap coil replacement) rather than compressor work.

What You Can Safely Check Before Calling

  • Replace the water filter. Six months is the maximum. Most LG ice maker complaints resolve here.
  • Check the condenser coils. On most LG French door platforms the coils are accessible at the bottom rear. Dust and pet hair buildup is the #1 preventable cause of cooling problems.
  • Verify the doors are sealing. Run a hand along each gasket while the door is closed. Cold air escaping = lost seal.
  • Don’t defrost before the service call. If the symptom is “warm fridge” and there’s ice or frost visible, I need to see the failure state to diagnose accurately. Defrosting first erases the diagnostic evidence and forces a second trip.

French Door Bottom Freezers in Stark County

French door bottom-freezer is the dominant LG configuration around here — and the platform with the most repeat reed-valve failures. I stock common LG parts on the truck including French door components and compressor-related diagnostics tools. First-call complete rate on LG calls runs 85–90%; most repairs finish in a single visit unless the call is a sealed-system job that requires part-ordering.
