On a service call to Malvern, OH, Samuel Willhite diagnosed a KitchenAid under-counter ice machine that was cooling normally but producing no ice. The recirculation pump impeller had stripped, leaving water sitting in the reservoir instead of circulating over the evaporator plate. Replacing the pump restored normal operation.
The Problem
Under-counter ice maker not making ice. Unit cools, plate gets cold, wires warm. Reservoir fills with water but does not appear to pump it over the plate – suspect recirculation pump. Water present, no ice production.
The Repair
Customer reported under-counter ice maker not making ice. Found unit cycling and cooling normally with a full reservoir and full frost pattern on the evaporator, but the recirculation pump was running without moving water. Confirmed 14 VAC at the pump with no flow and found the recirculation pump impeller (W10489122) stripped. Replaced the pump; unit resumed filling, flushing, and circulating water over the plate with a normal pull-down to 32°F, confirming the repair. Customer noted a possible drain hose disturbance behind a finished ceiling from moving the unit before service — not verifiable, no leakage or water damage evident at time of service, advised to monitor.
