On a service call to Snively Ave NW in Massillon, Samuel found a GE French-door refrigerator (model GNE29GMHCES) with a warm fresh food compartment and a non-functioning ice maker. Diagnostic test mode pointed to a slow evaporator fan and fault codes consistent with both issues. Software updates were applied on this visit, with the fan motor and ice maker assembly on order for a follow-up installation.
The Problem
Fridge section isn’t cooling and ice maker isn’t working
The Repair
Diagnosis: In diagnostic test mode the fresh food evaporator fan was only able to reach 500 RPM rather than the expected 2000 RPM, restricting airflow to the fresh food compartment and causing the warm condition (FF1 thermistor 48.09°F). The freezer ice maker would not complete its harvest cycle during test mode. Active fault codes were consistent with these findings — F203 (FF Evap Abnormal Defrosts) and F201 (FF Evap Defrost Error) tied to the restricted fan/airflow, F653 (IM FZ Harvest Error) tied to the ice maker, plus informational door-open codes. A “Warm Fresh Food and Freezer detected” alert was also present.
Parts replaced: WR60X26866 (fan); WR30X28682 (ice maker).
Repair Performed: Installed three manufacturer software updates to the main board and temperature control board. Software notes for this unit confirm the fresh food fan was upgraded on this model, with improvements to FF fan operation and defrost behavior. Ordered the replacement fresh food evaporator fan motor and ice maker assembly to complete the repair.
Status: Parts on order. Return trip required to install the fresh food evaporator fan motor and ice maker. Software updates applied this visit.
Note for customer: This update changes Sabbath/Shabbos mode behavior — the interior fresh food LEDs will now stay fully off rather than dimly lit when Sabbath mode is active.
