A Samsung dryer at a home on Nickelplate in Louisville, OH was powering on but wouldn’t start. When we opened it up, we found the screw that fastened the tensioner pulley was the wrong one, causing the belt to walk off and get damaged.
The Problem
The customer reported their Samsung dryer powers on but won’t start. The unit would receive power and light up, but the drum wouldn’t turn when the start button was pressed.
Diagnosis
The screw that fastened the tensioner pulley was the wrong one. As a result the belt was damaged and walked off. This improper fastener allowed the tensioner to shift position, causing the drive belt to slip off the drum and preventing the dryer from starting.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: ER6602-001655-BELT, DC97-14486A-ASSEMBLY DUCT HEATER, DC93-00634A-IDLER PULLEY
- Work performed: I replaced the tension pulley and screw as well as the belt and heat element. While I had it apart, I also cleaned the fins on the blower.
- Result: The dryer now starts properly and operates normally with the correct tensioner assembly and new drive belt.
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung dryers from this era are generally solid machines worth repairing when the issue involves mechanical components like belts and pulleys. The DV218AEB series was built well enough that replacing worn drive components typically provides several more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load and periodically wash it with warm soapy water to remove fabric softener buildup
- Check the exhaust vent outside your home monthly to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating
- Inspect the drum seals annually for wear that could allow lint to build up inside the cabinet
