A Maytag washer in Louisville wasn’t spinning on the spin cycle and had a rubber burning smell. When we arrived at East Broad Street, we found the problem was much worse than expected.
The Problem
The customer reported that the tub doesn’t spin on “Spin Cycle”, and there is rubber burning that I can smell. This combination of symptoms typically points to serious mechanical issues in the drive system.
Diagnosis
Our inspection revealed leaking water out the bottom and oil is leaking out. The transmission had failed completely, causing both the spinning problem and the burning smell. A seal kit was also needed to address the water leak.
The Repair
- Parts needed: New transmission and seal kit
- Work performed: None — customer opted to not fix
- Result: Customer chose replacement over repair
Is It Worth Repairing?
For this older Maytag top-load washer, a transmission replacement represents a major repair. The LAT2300AAE is from an earlier generation, and transmission failure combined with seal leaks often indicates the machine has reached the end of its practical service life. The customer made the right call choosing replacement.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Washers
- Check for water leaks around the base monthly — early detection can prevent transmission damage
- Don’t overload the tub, which puts extra strain on the transmission and drive components
- Use the correct water level for your load size to reduce unnecessary wear on mechanical parts
