A customer in Scio called because their GE washer doesn’t always spin all the water out of clothes. What we found during the inspection made it clear this wasn’t a simple spin cycle adjustment — the transmission was leaking oil, which meant this washer had reached the end of its useful life.
The Problem
The customer reported that their washer doesn’t always spin all the water out of clothes. Clothes were coming out wetter than they should, which is typically a spin cycle issue that can sometimes be resolved with software updates or mechanical adjustments.
Diagnosis
During our inspection, we discovered oil leaking from the transmission. Before noticing the leak, we attempted the SUM update for spin cycle performance. However, once we identified the transmission leak, it became clear this was a major internal failure that couldn’t be repaired cost-effectively.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None
- Work performed: Diagnostic inspection, SUM update attempt
- Result: Transmission leak identified; customer advised to replace unit
Is It Worth Repairing?
When a washer’s transmission starts leaking oil, replacement is almost always the better choice. Transmission repairs on GE top-load washers typically cost more than half the price of a new machine, and there’s no guarantee other age-related components won’t fail soon after. This customer made the smart decision to shop for a replacement washer.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Use HE detergent only and measure carefully — excess suds can stress the pump and transmission
- Don’t overload the tub; GE top-loaders need room for proper agitation and spin
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly with washer cleaner or white vinegar to prevent buildup
