A GE washer on Ohio Avenue in Massillon wasn’t agitating properly, though it spun and drained fine. When we opened it up, we found the agitator had come loose — the splines had separated from the original piece, leaving it unable to grip and move clothes during the wash cycle.
The Problem
The customer reported their washer was not agitating properly. The machine would still spin and drain fine, but clothes weren’t getting the agitation motion needed for proper cleaning.
Diagnosis
We found the agitator was loose inside the wash basket. The splines — the plastic teeth that connect the agitator to the drive mechanism — had come off the original piece. Without these splines engaged, the agitator couldn’t transfer power from the motor to create the back-and-forth washing motion.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None — agitator is no longer available
- Work performed: Diagnosed loose agitator and stripped splines
- Result: Customer advised of discontinued part availability
Is It Worth Repairing?
When critical parts like agitators become unavailable from the manufacturer, repair options become limited. GE washers from this era were reliable workhorses, but discontinued parts support eventually makes replacement the more practical choice. The WLW3300B had a good run, but finding compatible agitator assemblies can be challenging and costly.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Check agitator tightness monthly — a loose agitator will eventually strip its splines
- Don’t overload the wash basket, which puts extra stress on drive components
- Use HE detergent even in non-HE models to reduce excessive suds that strain the motor
