A GE washer in Salem, OH was making banging sounds during the spin cycle and leaving clothes soaked with water. When we arrived, we found the tub nut had worked loose, causing the basket to come loose on the transmission shaft.
The Problem
The customer reported that when the washer spins it makes banging sounds and the whole washer bounces and is very loud. Additionally, everything was still soaked — there was no water in the washer but the clothes were dripping with water and soapy still.
Diagnosis
We had recently replaced the transmission in this washer. Upon inspection, we found that the tub nut had worked loose and the basket was loose on the transmission shaft. This explained both the violent shaking during spin and the poor water extraction.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WH38X10019 — shaft and tube assembly, WH2X1193 — nut hub
- Work performed: Cleaned the threads on the transmission shaft and reinstalled the tub nut with loctite to prevent it from happening again
- Result: No charge for today’s service
Is It Worth Repairing?
GE top-load washers like this GLWN2800D0WS are generally solid machines when maintained properly. Since we had recently replaced the transmission, securing the loose tub nut was a straightforward follow-up repair that restored full function to the unit.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Check for unusual vibration or banging during spin cycles — these can indicate loose internal components
- Don’t overload the tub, which can stress the transmission and related hardware
- Keep the washer level to prevent excessive movement during operation
