We returned to Salem, OH for a callback on a Whirlpool refrigerator that had previously received a circuit board replacement. The temperatures were flashing again along with the light, and it quit working just as before. What we found behind the back panel explained why the new circuit board failed too.
The Problem
The customer called because their refrigerator was doing the same thing it did before our June repair — temperatures flashing as well as the light, and it quit working. This started happening again despite the circuit board replacement we had performed earlier.
Diagnosis
We put a new circuit board on, but it did the same thing. When we took off the back panel, we discovered the wiring was all ate up by mice. The rodent damage was extensive enough to require approximately $200 in repairs to properly address.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None — customer declined repair
- Work performed: Diagnosis and assessment of mouse damage to wiring
- Result: Customer decided not to repair, and we hauled off the old fridge
Is It Worth Repairing?
When rodents damage refrigerator wiring this extensively, repair costs can quickly exceed the appliance’s value. For this older Whirlpool model with previous issues, the customer made the right choice to replace rather than invest $200+ in repairs that might not address all the hidden damage.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Seal gaps around refrigerator base and behind appliance to prevent rodent entry
- Keep area around and behind refrigerator clean and free of food debris that attracts mice
- Check behind appliance periodically for signs of rodent activity or droppings
