A GE washer and dryer set in North Canton showed serious safety issues during what started as routine maintenance. The dryer had developed a burning smell and sound change, while the washer needed standard upkeep. What we found was a fire hazard that required immediate attention.
The Problem
The customer reported a burning smell and sound change from their GE dryer. They also requested routine maintenance on the matching washer in the set.
Diagnosis
The dryer vent tested as heavily obstructed. The flexible line from the wall to the dryer was somewhat deteriorated and leaking a bit of dryer exhaust so that may have affected the noise change. The main power cord to the control board on the dryer was burnt and melted from a loose connection. It was melted bad enough that it was fastened to the board and could not be removed without destroying the board. The control board is no longer available. On the washing machine, the drum is somewhat loose with evident bearing or drum support failure.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: No parts available for repair
- Work performed: Diagnostic testing and safety assessment
- Result: Unit deemed unsafe for operation and replacement recommended
Is It Worth Repairing?
When a control board is melted beyond repair and no longer available, replacement is the only safe option. GE washers and dryers of this age often develop multiple issues simultaneously, making replacement more cost-effective than individual repairs. The fire hazard alone makes continued use dangerous.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washer and Dryer Sets
- Clean dryer vents annually to prevent obstructions that cause overheating
- Replace deteriorated flexible vent lines before they leak exhaust
- Check washer drum movement during spin cycles for early bearing wear detection
