A GE side-by-side refrigerator in Canton wasn’t keeping food cold — freezer running at 6°F instead of 0°F, fresh food section at 47°F, and no water coming from the door dispenser. We found the evaporator fan blade had come off its motor hub and the water tank assembly had failed.
The Problem
The homeowner called because their refrigerator wasn’t maintaining safe temperatures. The freezer was reading 6°F when it should be near 0°F, and the fresh food compartment was at 47°F — well above the safe zone. On top of that, the water dispenser had stopped working entirely.
Diagnosis
Inside the freezer compartment, we found the evaporator fan blade had slipped off the motor hub, which meant cold air wasn’t circulating properly through the refrigerator. The motor was running, but without the blade attached, there was barely any airflow. For the water dispenser issue, the internal water tank assembly had failed and wasn’t supplying flow to the door mechanism.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WR17X11440 — water tank assembly
- Work performed: Reattached evaporator fan blade to motor hub, replaced failed water tank assembly
- Result: Proper airflow restored, temperatures trending back to setpoints, water dispenser flowing normally
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE side-by-side is a solid model that typically runs 12-15 years with proper maintenance. The fan blade issue was a simple reattachment, and while the water tank replacement required more work, these aren’t expensive repairs on a refrigerator that should have plenty of life left.
Maintenance Tips for GE Side-by-Side Refrigerators
- Check that the evaporator fan blade is secure — this model’s blade can work loose over time from vibration
- Replace the water filter every 6 months, especially in Stark County where hard water can clog the system faster
- Clean the condenser coils underneath every 6 months — GE side-by-sides work harder when airflow is restricted
