A Louisville homeowner called about their Samsung dishwasher leaving liquid soap all over the front and undissolved detergent pods at the bottom. Our diagnosis revealed the bottom spray arm wasn’t moving due to a failed motor that’s no longer available for this model.
The Problem
The soap was not being absorbed by the dishwasher. When they put soap in the dishwasher detergent compartment and the dishwasher finished running, it would open with liquid soap all over the front of the dishwasher and on the dishes. Detergent pods were used and when the dishwasher opened they weren’t dissolved, just sitting at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Diagnosis
The bottom spray arm was not moving. Testing revealed the bottom spray arm motor had failed completely. Without the spray arm rotating, water couldn’t properly circulate to dissolve detergent or clean dishes effectively.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None — required part not available
- Work performed: Diagnosed failed bottom spray arm motor
- Result: Motor determined to be discontinued by Samsung
Is It Worth Repairing?
When critical parts like spray arm motors become unavailable for Samsung dishwashers, replacement becomes the practical option. This DW80M9960US is from their premium line, but without available parts, even high-end models can’t be restored to working condition.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Dishwashers
- Remove and rinse spray arms monthly to prevent clogs that strain the motor
- Use Samsung-recommended detergent amounts to avoid oversudsing
- Clean the dishwasher filter weekly to maintain proper water flow
