We received a call from a customer in Massillon whose Admiral washer wasn’t spinning out all the water and suds, especially with heavier loads like towels. What started as a spin issue turned into a more serious problem when we arrived for the repair.
The Problem
The customer reported that their washer doesn’t spin out all the water and suds. It seems to be with heavier loads like towels.
Diagnosis
During our first visit, we found the mode shifter had failed with an ohms reading of 80k. However, when we returned for a follow-up, the machine wasn’t operating at all. The motor was dead and water was leaking from the tub seal.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: Mode shifter (initial repair)
- Work performed: Replaced the mode shifter during first visit
- Result: Additional failures developed – motor died and tub seal began leaking, making the unit non-repairable
Is It Worth Repairing?
Admiral washers from this era often experience multiple system failures as they age. When a washer develops both motor failure and tub seal leaks simultaneously, the repair costs typically exceed the machine’s remaining value. The customer made the right decision to replace the unit rather than invest in extensive repairs.
Maintenance Tips for Admiral Washers
- Don’t overload with heavy items like towels – this strains the motor and transmission components
- Check and clean the mode shifter connection points annually to prevent corrosion
- Watch for early signs of tub seal leaks around the base of the machine
