A rental property owner in Louisville called about their Speed Queen commercial washer that does not seem to be emptying water. When we arrived at the Kennedy Street location, we found the washing machine was in error mode with a small amount of water sitting in the bottom of the drum.
The Problem
The customer reported that their Speed Queen commercial washer at their rental unit does not seem to be emptying water. This is a common concern that can indicate drainage issues or cycle interruption problems.
Diagnosis
The washing machine was in error mode when I arrived. There was a small amount of water sitting in the bottom of the drum. Upon inspection, I found the cold water valve was shut off. It appears that somebody shut the cold water off midcycle for some reason, causing the unit to error out and stop the cycle before completing the drain sequence.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: No parts replaced
- Work performed: Turned the cold water valve on and power cycled the unit
- Result: The washer proceeded through a complete cycle and washes, drains and spins fine
Is It Worth Repairing?
Speed Queen commercial washers are built for heavy-duty use and longevity. This particular issue required no parts replacement — just restoring the water supply that had been inadvertently shut off. Speed Queen units are designed to handle rental property environments and typically provide years of reliable service when properly maintained.
Maintenance Tips for Speed Queen Washers
- Check that water supply valves remain fully open — Speed Queen units require adequate water pressure for proper operation
- Clean the lint filter regularly to prevent drainage issues that could mimic water retention problems
- In rental properties, consider posting basic operating instructions to prevent tenants from interrupting cycles
