A Whirlpool washer on Milo Rd NW in Carrollton wasn’t draining properly and the lid wouldn’t unlock after a Monday evening wash cycle. When we opened it up, we found a broken wire harness in the lower drain circuit that had tested open.
The Problem
The customer ran a load Monday evening and when they went to switch it out the lid would not unlock. They tried multiple times then a few lights started flashing. After unplugging it for about 10 minutes they were able to get the lid open, but the clothes were still wet (not sitting in water) and wouldn’t spin again when they tried.
Diagnosis
Following Technical Service Pointer W11750573 Rev. B for vertically mounted drain pump issues and F9E1 fault codes, we tested the lower harness drain circuit and found it was open. The wire harness had broken, likely due to inadvertent hand cart interaction during installation or during extreme off-balance load scenarios.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W11643701 — Lower harness
- Work performed: Replaced the broken wire harness in the lower drain circuit
- Result: Drain circuit tested good and washer was back in working order
Is It Worth Repairing?
This WTW5057LW0 is a solid mid-range Whirlpool top-loader that typically runs 10-15 years with proper care. A wire harness replacement is a straightforward repair that restores full functionality, making it definitely worth fixing on a machine this age.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Washers
- Keep loads balanced to prevent extreme agitation that can stress internal wiring
- Leave the lid open after cycles to let the drum air dry and prevent moisture buildup
- Run a cleaning cycle monthly with Whirlpool-approved washer cleaner to prevent buildup
