Whirlpool Dryer Repair – Louisville, OH (WED75HEFW1)

Samuel was on a service call on Danielle Ave in Louisville, OH for a Whirlpool dryer that squeaked at startup with a light load. The worn drive components were replaced and the dryer came out running quietly, but a follow-up visit the next day uncovered a badly restricted exhaust vent that was cutting auto cycles short, and the customer was shown the duct measurements and given a clear path forward on the venting.

The Problem

Squeaks when started with a light load; squeaking stops when more clothes are added. Dryer turns, heats, and dries fine otherwise. Issue started about a month ago. Front-loading, purchased in 2018.

The Repair

Complaint: squeak on start with light load, stops as load increases; dryer turns, heats and dries otherwise. Found worn idler pulley/belt and support rollers causing the squeak. Replaced drive belt, idler pulley and four drum support rollers (repair kit 4392067) and heater element (WP3387747). Ran dryer after repair — turns quietly, heats, no squeak. Good to go.

Post-repair verification: Service Diagnostic mode showed stored codes F3E6, F4E3, F2E1, F4E4 (stale from teardown/history); cleared, display 888. Loads Test: moisture sensor passed (strips bridged, repeating beep + readout), door switch OK, motor and heater run in test. Install Diagnostics airflow test came back restricted — exhaust vent is fairly obstructed. Recommended customer have the dryer vent professionally cleaned soon; a restricted vent makes the dryer run longer and is the main cause of heating element failure.

10/27 return visit: Customer reported cycles ending after 3-4 minutes with a load after yesterday’s repair. Verified moisture sensor and door switch connectors plugged in and seated; moisture sensor passes Loads Test; no fault codes stored after the customer’s failed cycles or after test runs. Timed Dry 40-minute test ran and counted down normally (8+ minutes, no shut-off) — control, sensor circuit and dryer are working correctly. The early shut-off on auto cycles is caused by the exhaust vent: with almost no airflow, the auto-dry sensing cannot read moisture properly and ends the cycle early.

Vent inspection: about 4 ft of smooth pipe from the wall, fairly obstructed; then an 8-ft section of semi-rigid duct mostly un-expanded (compressed to ~5 ft) with heavy tape and several joints; then flimsy foil “slinky” duct to the dryer. Measured airflow 5 mph at the wall pipe with the semi-rigid removed, and 15 mph coming out of the foil duct — the duct run is restricting the exhaust badly. Showed the customer the readings. Recommended the vent be cleaned and the duct run replaced with proper rigid/semi-rigid duct, fully extended, minimal joints, no foil slinky duct. Customer will take care of the venting. Dryer should dry normally once the vent is corrected; restricted venting also shortens heating element life.
