Maytag Serial Number Lookup — How Old Is My Maytag Appliance?
Reads both Maytag date codes — the classic pre-Whirlpool letter code and the modern Whirlpool-era code.
How old is my Maytag appliance?
Enter your serial number and we'll read the manufacture date off it — whichever era of Maytag code it uses — and tell you what that means for warranty.
Classic Maytag serials end in two letters (the date code). Newer ones start with letters instead — the tool reads both.
Trying to figure out how old your Maytag washer, dryer or refrigerator is — or whether it might still be under warranty? Enter your serial number in the tool above and our free decoder will read the manufacture date off it — no sign-up, no waiting. Maytag is a special case: it has used two completely different date-code systems over the years, and most online decoders only know one of them. Ours reads both.
Maytag built appliances independently for over a century before Whirlpool acquired it in 2006 — so a serial number from a classic Newton-era Maytag is written in a different language than one from a machine built last year. The tool figures out which era yours is from the shape of the serial itself. If your Maytag needs repair either way, see our full Maytag appliance repair page.
How to read a Maytag serial number (two eras)
Classic Maytag: digits, then TWO letters at the end
Serials like 15114672UY — a run of digits with exactly two letters at the end — are the classic pre-Whirlpool code, used through the mid-2000s (and on Jenn-Air and Amana during Maytag's ownership). The first letter is the year and the second letter is the month. The catch: the year letters repeat every 24 years, so one letter can mean, say, 1998 or 1974 — the tool shows both and the machine's style settles it.
Modern Maytag: letters at the FRONT
Serials like MT2513399 — one or two letters first, then all digits — are the Whirlpool-era code used since the acquisition. A character near the front carries the year and the two digits after it are the week. Whirlpool has reused those year codes too and never published an official key, so the tool shows every plausible year rather than guessing.
Where to find it
On a washer, check under the lid or around the door opening; on a dryer, inside the door or on the back panel. Refrigerators carry it inside on a side wall or ceiling; dishwashers around the door opening; ranges on the frame or behind a drawer.

Why we show more than one year (and most decoders shouldn't hide it)
Both Maytag date-code systems recycle their year codes, and it's worth being straight about what that means:
- The classic code repeats every 24 years. The letter U means 1998 — and it also meant 1974. A well-kept older Maytag can genuinely be either, so we show both and let the machine's style (or a quick photo to us) settle it.
- The modern code repeats too, and the published decoders disagree. Whirlpool never released an official key for the post-2006 code, and the reverse-engineered charts online are a year apart on some mid-2000s letters. We show every plausible year instead of picking a side.
- The month (classic) and week (modern) are the dependable parts. Those we state with confidence — it's the year that carries the ambiguity.
For most appliances the candidate years still answer the real question (“is this thing 5 years old or 25?”). When it genuinely matters, text us a photo of the model and serial tag and we'll pin it down exactly — the model number usually resolves it on the spot.
Maytag serial number questions
How do I tell how old my Maytag appliance is?
Find the serial number on the data plate and enter it in the decoder above. It automatically detects which Maytag date-code era your serial uses — the classic code ending in two letters, or the modern Whirlpool-era code — and reads the manufacture date. If it shows more than one plausible year, text us a photo of the tag and we'll pin it down.
Is Maytag made by Whirlpool now?
Yes — Whirlpool Corporation acquired Maytag in 2006. That's exactly why there are two serial-number systems: appliances from before the acquisition use Maytag's own letter code, and appliances built since use the Whirlpool family code.
Where is the serial number on a Maytag washer or dryer?
On a top-load washer, lift the lid and check the rim or the back panel; on a front-loader, check around the door opening. On a dryer, look inside the door or on the back. The data plate lists both the model and serial number.
Does Maytag really have a 10-year warranty?
Partly — and the fine print matters. The first year covers parts and labor. Years two through ten cover specific component parts only, with no labor — for example the washer drive motor and wash basket, the dryer drive motor and drum, or the refrigerator compressor. Our Maytag warranty guide breaks down exactly what's covered.
Does this decoder work for old Maytag wringer washers?
Mostly. Maytag's classic date code goes back to the 1960s, and the tool reads it. The very oldest machines (1950s wringers) used a different arrangement — if the tool can't read yours, text us a photo and we'll decode it by hand. We enjoy the old ones.
Can you just tell me the exact age from a photo?
Yes — that's often the most accurate route. Text a photo of the model and serial tag to (330) 693-9163 and we'll use the model number alongside the serial to nail down the year, and tell you whether a repair is worth it.
