A customer in North Canton called about their Whirlpool dryer making a loud bang as the drum rotates. When we opened up the WED5800SW0, we found the support rollers under the drum had broken — a common failure point that creates dramatic noise when the drum loses proper support.
The Problem
The customer reported their dryer was making a loud bang as drum rotates. This type of noise typically indicates structural support issues inside the drum assembly, making the dryer unsafe to continue operating.
Diagnosis
Upon inspection, we found the support rollers under the drum had broken. When these rollers fail, the drum loses its proper support and can bang against the cabinet walls during rotation, creating the loud noise the customer experienced.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 4392065-REPAIR-DYR (dryer repair kit including support rollers, idler pulley and belt), WP3392519-FUSE-THRML (thermal fuse), 279838-ELEMENT (heat element)
- Work performed: Replaced the two support rollers, idler pulley and belt with the dryer repair kit. While we were working on it we replaced the thermal fuse and heat element also
- Result: Dryer operates quietly with proper drum support and heating function restored
Is It Worth Repairing?
This 2015-2017 era Whirlpool dryer still has good service life ahead of it. Support roller replacement is a standard repair that typically provides years of reliable operation afterward. With the heating elements also refreshed, this unit should perform well for several more years.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load — excessive lint buildup forces the heating system to work harder
- Check and clean the exterior dryer vent annually to prevent airflow restrictions
- Avoid overloading the drum, which puts extra stress on support rollers and drive components
