GE Range Repair – Canton, OH (JBS55DM2WW)

On a service call to Canton, OH, Samuel Willhite diagnosed a GE range that the customer believed was shutting off before reaching the correct temperature. After running multiple bake cycles and testing the customer’s dial thermometer, the oven was confirmed to be operating within spec. The culprit was a faulty dial thermometer giving false low readings.

Problem: Oven shuts off before reaching the correct temperature. The heating element is working, it has been replaced in the last year.

The Repair

Customer complaint: oven shuts off before reaching set temperature. Ran verification at 350°F setpoint. Preheat from 81°F ambient completed in 8 minutes with +27°F overshoot; broil preheat assist confirmed operating. Monitored 4 complete bake cycles: cycling valleys 320-332°F, peaks 345-372°F, overall average 344°F against 350°F set — within spec. No dropouts, error codes, or relay events. Bake element and connections intact (element replaced within last year). Customer’s dial thermometer verified faulty: read 0°F at 81°F ambient, lagged 100+°F behind during preheat ramp. Complaint originated from thermometer reading 250-290°F while oven had reached setpoint and element cycled off normally. Oven verified operating to spec; no repair needed. Advised customer to discard dial thermometer.
