What We Fix

Common Freezer Problems We Repair

Freezer failures usually come down to a handful of root causes. Our technicians carry the parts and diagnostic tools to identify and repair the most common issues on the first visit.

🌡️
Freezer Not Freezing or Too Warm

Temperature creeping above 0°F is the most common complaint. Usually traces back to the sealed system, evaporator fan, or a failing defrost component allowing frost to block airflow to the evaporator coil.

Common cause: defrost heater failure, failed evaporator fan, sealed-system leak

❄️
Excessive Frost & Ice Buildup

A thick layer of frost on the evaporator coil or freezer walls points to a broken defrost cycle. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/control board are the usual suspects — all diagnosable and replaceable.

Common cause: failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or main control board

🔊
Loud Noises — Rattling, Clicking, or Humming

Loud compressor noise, rattling condenser fan blades, or a clicking relay on startup signals a compressor or start relay issue. Unusual humming from the evaporator side often means a failing fan motor.

Common cause: failing start relay, condenser/evaporator fan motor, compressor wear

🧊
Ice Maker Not Making Ice

Freezer-mounted ice makers fail for several distinct reasons: the water inlet valve, ice maker module, freezer temperature being too high, or a jammed ice mold. We diagnose the actual component rather than defaulting to a full assembly replacement.

Common cause: inlet valve, ice maker module, icemaker thermostat, temperature issue

🚪
Door Seal (Gasket) Failure

A torn, hardened, or poorly-seating door gasket lets warm air in constantly. This forces the compressor to overwork, raises energy costs, and causes frost buildup near the door. Gasket replacement is one of the most cost-effective freezer repairs available.

Common cause: torn or deformed door gasket, misaligned door or hinge

📊
Temperature Fluctuation

A freezer that cycles between too cold and not cold enough — thawing and refreezing food — often indicates a failing thermostat, temperature sensor (thermistor), or a compressor that’s losing efficiency under load. We use calibrated testing rather than guesswork.

Common cause: thermistor, thermostat, control board, or compressor efficiency loss

💧
Water Pooling or Leaking

Water under or inside the freezer typically comes from a clogged or frozen defrost drain. The meltwater from a defrost cycle has nowhere to go and eventually overflows. A straightforward repair — drain clearing and, if needed, drain heater replacement.

Common cause: clogged defrost drain, drain heater failure, cracked drain pan

Compressor / Sealed System Issues

A compressor that runs but can’t hold temperature, or a system that’s lost refrigerant charge, requires a technician certified to work on sealed refrigerant systems. Our lead technician holds Dyer Academy sealed system certification with Lokring and R-600a hydrocarbon refrigerant training.

Common cause: low refrigerant charge, compressor wear, restricted capillary tube

🖥️
Control Board & Electronic Failures

Modern freezers rely on a main control board to manage the defrost cycle, temperature, fans, and ice maker. When the board fails, symptoms can look like almost any other problem. We test components individually before recommending a board replacement.

Common cause: main control board, user interface board, sensor failure

All Configurations Serviced

We Repair Every Freezer Type

Whether it’s the chest freezer in the garage, the upright in the basement, or a built-in drawer unit, we carry parts and experience across the full range of freezer configurations.

🗃️ Chest Freezers

Top-loading chest freezers are workhorses — but when they fail, the repair window is short before food loss becomes costly. Common issues include compressor relay failures, thermostat problems, and gasket deterioration on the lid seal. We stock high-turnover parts for Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Maytag, and GE chest units.

🏛️ Upright Freezers

Upright freezers with frost-free systems involve more components — defrost heaters, termination thermostats, evaporator fan motors — and more things that can fail. Our diagnostic process works through each component systematically so we identify the actual failure, not just the symptom.

🧊 Drawer / Column Freezers

Integrated drawer freezers and column-style built-in units (common in Bosch and high-end brands) require brand-specific knowledge and access to OEM parts. As a Bosch factory-authorized servicer, we have direct parts access and factory-level diagnostic training for these systems.

❄️ Freezer-over-Refrigerator (Top-Mount)

The traditional top-freezer configuration is still among the most reliable designs — but the shared refrigerant circuit means a sealed-system issue in one section affects the other. We diagnose and repair both sides to confirm the root cause before replacing parts.

🔲 French Door Bottom-Freezer

Bottom-freezer drawer units are prone to defrost drain clogs (the drain sits low and is more likely to freeze) and ice maker issues. Samsung and LG French door models have well-documented failure modes our technicians know by heart.

🌐 Side-by-Side Freezer Sections

Side-by-side refrigerators with a vertical freezer section share an evaporator and defrost system. Frost buildup on the freezer side that doesn’t clear typically signals a defrost issue affecting both compartments. We service all major brands in this configuration.

Why It Matters

Sealed System Certification — Not Everyone Can Do This

Most appliance repair companies won’t touch a sealed refrigerant system. Compressor replacement or refrigerant work requires specific certification — and carries real liability if done incorrectly. Louisville Appliance Repair was founded by Sam Willhite, who completed Dyer Academy’s sealed system repair course in April 2024 with Lokring mechanical refrigerant fittings and R-600a (isobutane) hydrocarbon refrigerant certification.

That means when a compressor test confirms a sealed system failure, our technicians can give you a real answer — repair or replace — instead of just recommending replacement because they can’t go further.

  • Dyer Academy sealed system certification (April 2024)
  • Lokring mechanical refrigerant fitting technique — no torch required
  • R-600a (isobutane) hydrocarbon refrigerant trained
  • Bosch factory-authorized — direct OEM parts access
  • Speed Queen / Alliance Laundry factory-authorized
  • Only independent in Stark County holding both Bosch + Speed Queen authorizations simultaneously
  • 5,000+ appliance repairs since 2018 — freezers, refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges

Frequently Asked Questions

Freezer Repair Questions

How do I know if my freezer is worth repairing?
Honestly? The best appliance is the one already in your home. Older freezers — especially units from the 80s and 90s — are often built better than today’s, run on simpler mechanical systems, and are very economical to repair. A bad defrost thermostat or a worn gasket on a 20-year-old chest freezer is almost always worth fixing. We repair everything that makes economic sense, and we’ll tell you straight if it doesn’t. The one case we’ll steer you away from repair: a compressor failure on a low-cost modern unit where the repair approaches replacement cost. Otherwise, our default is to keep your appliance running.

My freezer stopped freezing — can it be repaired in one visit?
In most cases, yes. Our 85–90% first-call complete rate means we resolve the majority of repairs in a single trip. We carry a comprehensive stock of high-turnover parts for common brands. If your freezer stops freezing due to a defrost component, fan motor, relay, or thermostat — the most common causes — we’ll very likely have the part on the truck.

Can you repair the sealed refrigerant system?
Yes. Our lead technician holds Dyer Academy sealed system certification (April 2024) and is trained on Lokring mechanical refrigerant fittings and R-600a hydrocarbon refrigerant. This allows us to evaluate and repair compressor and refrigerant circuit issues that most independent shops decline. We test the full system first to confirm a sealed system failure before recommending that type of repair — it’s labor-intensive, and we’ll only recommend it when it makes economic sense for the customer.

Do you service chest freezers?
Yes. Chest freezers, upright freezers, drawer units, and freezer sections in refrigerators — we service all of them. Chest freezers typically have simpler mechanical designs but can still fail at the compressor, thermostat, relay, gasket, or evaporator. Diagnosis usually takes 20–30 minutes.

Why is there frost buildup all over the inside of my freezer?
Heavy frost on the interior walls or on the evaporator coil almost always points to a defrost system failure. Frost-free freezers run a timed defrost cycle (usually every 8–12 hours) to melt accumulated frost off the evaporator coil. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or control board fails, frost builds up until it blocks airflow — which then causes the freezer to warm up. The fix is replacing the failed defrost component, typically a straightforward repair.

What warranty do you offer on freezer repairs?
We provide a 6-month labor warranty on all completed repairs. Parts warranties vary by manufacturer — OEM parts from brands like Whirlpool, GE, and LG carry their own 90-day to 1-year warranty, which we’ll walk you through at the time of service. If the same issue recurs within our labor warranty period, we come back and make it right.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee?
Yes — a diagnostic fee applies to the service call. This fee covers the technician’s time to diagnose the failure. If you proceed with the repair, the diagnostic fee is applied toward the total repair cost. We’ll give you a clear quote for parts and labor before starting any work, and there’s no obligation to proceed if the repair doesn’t make sense for your situation.
