How old is my GE appliance?

Enter your GE serial number and we'll decode the manufacture date — and tell you whether it might still be under warranty.

A GE serial number is two letters followed by six numbers (a final letter for the plant is fine). The first two letters carry the date.

How to read a GE serial number

Every GE appliance serial number follows the same pattern: two letters followed by six numbers (sometimes with one more letter at the end that identifies the factory). The two letters at the front are what tell you the date:

First letter = month

The first letter is the month the appliance was built — for example, M is July and T is October.

Second letter = year

The second letter is the year. GE reuses the same set of year letters every 12 years, so R could mean 2020, 2008 or 1996 — the decoder shows the most recent likely year.

Where to find it

Check the data plate or sticker — commonly inside the refrigerator or door frame, around the door opening on a dishwasher, on the back of a range, or inside the lid or door on a washer or dryer.

Can't find the serial number or the decoder isn't recognizing it? Just call us at (330) 693-9163 — we'll locate it with you and tell you what your options are.

Why the manufacture date matters for warranty

Knowing how old your GE appliance is gives you a quick read on whether a repair might be covered:

  • Under about a year old: Most GE appliances carry a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor from the purchase date. There's a good chance the repair is covered — and with your proof of purchase, we can handle the GE authorization for you.
  • One to five years old: The basic warranty has usually passed, but some parts are covered much longer — sealed cooling systems on Café and GE Profile refrigerators up to five years, and certain GE washer motors up to ten. Worth a quick check before you pay out of pocket.
  • Older than five years: Likely out of warranty — but a single failed component is almost always far cheaper than a new GE unit, and the best appliance is usually the one already in your kitchen.

The manufacture date is a guide, not the final word — actual coverage depends on your purchase date and model. If you're close to a coverage line, give us a call and we'll help you check before scheduling. And if you've lost your receipt, GE can use this same serial number to confirm the appliance's age.

GE serial number questions

How do I tell how old my GE appliance is?

Find the serial number on the appliance's data plate and enter it in the decoder above. The first letter is the month it was built and the second letter is the year, so the tool can tell you the manufacture date in seconds.

Where is the serial number on a GE appliance?

It's on the data plate or sticker. On a refrigerator it's often inside on a side wall or door frame; on a dishwasher around the door opening; on a range on the back or under a burner; and on a washer or dryer inside the lid or door.

What does a GE serial number look like?

Two letters followed by six numbers, sometimes with one more letter at the end for the factory — for example, MT456789. The two letters at the front carry the manufacture date.

Does the manufacture date tell me if I'm under warranty?

It gives you a strong indication. Most GE appliances have a one-year parts-and-labor warranty from the purchase date, and some parts are covered longer. If your appliance is roughly five years old or newer, it's worth checking your coverage — call us at (330) 693-9163 and we'll help.

I lost my receipt — can I still get warranty service?

Possibly. If you can't find proof of purchase, GE can use the serial number to determine the appliance's age and warranty status. We can help you locate the serial number and sort it out.

Which GE brands does this work for?

The same GE date-code format is used across GE, GE Profile, Café, Monogram, Hotpoint, Haier and Adora appliances — and we're factory-authorized to repair all of them.
