A Maytag refrigerator in North Canton wasn’t cooling at all — both the freezer and refrigerator sections had stopped working. After an initial service call where the unit appeared to be operating correctly, the symptoms returned and we diagnosed a failed start relay.
The Problem
On Tuesday, the customer’s daughter noticed that things in the freezer were not frozen. By Wednesday morning, the refrigerator portion wasn’t cooling either. The whole unit had stopped cooling completely.
Diagnosis
During our first visit on January 21st, the fridge was operating correctly when we arrived. We checked for errors in the components and found them good, then cleaned lint and dust from the rear compartment. The circuit board passed visual inspection. However, when the symptoms returned, we were able to diagnose a failed start relay during our return visit on January 23rd.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10197428 — start relay
- Work performed: Replaced the failed start relay
- Result: The unit is operating as designed
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Maytag refrigerator model is a solid appliance, and a start relay failure is a common, cost-effective repair. When the compressor and other major components are still functioning properly, replacing a failed start relay typically provides years of continued reliable operation.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Refrigerators
- Keep the rear compartment free of lint and dust buildup — clean it every 6 months to prevent overheating
- Check door seals regularly and replace if they’re cracked or not sealing properly
- Keep condenser coils clean to maintain efficient cooling and reduce strain on electrical components
