A Maytag gas dryer in Leetonia wasn’t producing heat, turning normal 45-minute loads into 90-minute marathons that still came out damp. We found a failed igniter and weak gas valve coils preventing the burner from lighting properly.
The Problem
The homeowner reported their LDG8414AAE was running full cycles but producing little to no heat. Medium loads were taking about 90 minutes and clothes felt cool when the door opened. The drum tumbled normally, but something was clearly wrong with the heating system.
Diagnosis
When we opened the front panel and observed the burner viewport during a cycle, no flame was visible. Testing the igniter showed it measured open circuit with high resistance — a clear failure. The gas valve coils were also weak and failing when they warmed up during operation. The exhaust airflow was strong and the vent path was clear, so the problem was definitely in the ignition system.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 279311 igniter and 279834 gas valve coil pack
- Work performed: Removed failed igniter and both gas valve coils, installed new components, reconnected gas line
- Result: Burner now lights quickly and cycles normally through the entire dry cycle
Is It Worth Repairing?
This 2018 Maytag LDG8414AAE had solid build quality and should run reliably for several more years with proper maintenance. Gas dryer ignition systems are common wear items, and replacing them is much more economical than buying a new unit. The drum, motor, and controls were all in excellent condition.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Gas Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every single load — Maytag’s high-efficiency design depends on unrestricted airflow
- Check your gas supply connections annually; loose fittings can cause inconsistent ignition on LDG models
- If you notice the igniter glowing orange but no flame appears, stop using the dryer immediately — continuing to run it can damage the gas valve coils
