We recently completed repairs on both a Whirlpool refrigerator and dishwasher at a home on Summit Street in North Canton, OH. The fridge had a freezing issue where the back of the freezer was icing up, causing the freezer to over-freeze while the fridge got warm, and the dishwasher was making a grinding noise from the bottom left during draining.
The Problem
The customer reported that the back of the freezer was icing up, causing the freezer to over-freeze while the fridge gets warm. The left side of the French door was noticeably hot, and the fridge wasn’t shutting off even briefly. For the dishwasher, there was a grinding noise from the bottom left of the unit upon draining that sounded like a small screw in the drain’s pump or impeller.
Diagnosis
On the refrigerator, I found the compressor relay on the fridge board was sticking and preventing the fridge from defrosting properly. This explained why the freezer was icing up and the unit wasn’t cycling normally. For the dishwasher, inspection revealed a piece of plastic lodged in the drain pump causing the grinding noise.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10503278 — main control/jazz board for refrigerator
- Work performed: Replaced the main control board and pulled a piece of plastic from the drain pump on the dishwasher
- Result: Refrigerator now cycles properly and defrosts correctly; dishwasher drains quietly without grinding
Is It Worth Repairing?
Whirlpool appliances are generally well-built and worth repairing when the issue is a control board or minor obstruction like this. The refrigerator and dishwasher repairs we performed address the root causes and should provide years of continued service. Control board replacements are often more cost-effective than appliance replacement, especially on newer Whirlpool models.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators and Dishwashers
- Keep refrigerator coils clean and check door seals regularly to prevent overworking the compressor and control systems
- Run dishwasher cleaning cycles monthly and avoid putting small items that could fall through the rack into the drain area
- For Whirlpool French door refrigerators, ensure proper airflow around the unit and avoid blocking vents inside the freezer compartment
