A customer in Minerva called us about their LG refrigerator’s ice dispenser that had stopped working completely. When I opened the freezer section, I found the ice passage door assembly was cracked and wouldn’t seal properly, allowing cold air to escape and preventing the dispenser mechanism from operating.
The Problem
The homeowner reported their LG refrigerator’s ice dispenser had quit dispensing ice entirely. They could hear the motor trying to run when they pressed the dispenser paddle, but no ice would come out. The ice maker itself was still producing ice normally.
Diagnosis
I removed the freezer’s interior panels to access the ice chute assembly. The ice passage door — the plastic flap that opens and closes to allow ice through — had developed stress cracks around the hinge points. These cracks prevented the door from sealing shut, disrupting the air pressure needed for proper ice flow and allowing freezer air to leak into the dispenser chute.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: ABN72909903 — CAP ASSEMBLY DUCT (ice passage door)
- Work performed: Removed damaged ice passage door assembly, installed new cap assembly with proper alignment
- Result: Ice dispenser now operates smoothly with full ice flow and proper door sealing
Is It Worth Repairing?
LG refrigerators typically run 12-15 years with proper maintenance, and ice dispenser components like passage doors are designed to be serviceable. This particular failure is common on LG models after 5-7 years due to repeated thermal cycling. The repair restores full functionality and is much more economical than replacing a refrigerator that’s otherwise working fine.
Maintenance Tips for LG Refrigerators
- Replace the LG LT1000P water filter every 200 gallons or 6 months — old filters reduce ice production and can cause mineral buildup in the ice maker
- Run LG’s ice maker cleaning cycle monthly using distilled white vinegar to prevent calcium deposits on the ice passage door
- Keep the ice bin no more than 3/4 full to prevent ice from jamming the passage door mechanism during dispensing
