A Whirlpool refrigerator on Macduff Drive Northwest in North Canton wasn’t producing ice, and the ice bin auger was stripped. Despite a new water filter and ice maker installed last year, ice had frozen inside the unit and after thawing, it stopped filling completely.
The Problem
The customer reported their Whirlpool refrigerator ice maker not producing ice and noted the ice bin auger was stripped. They had installed a new water filter that day even though it wasn’t time yet, and a new ice maker had been put in last year. Ice was frozen in the ice maker, which they removed and let thaw out, but after putting it back in, it wasn’t filling at all.
Diagnosis
The inspection revealed multiple components in the ice dispensing system had failed. The auger drive shaft was damaged along with its seal and hub assembly at the bottom of the ice bin. The infrared ice level sensor was also malfunctioning, preventing proper ice production cycles.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WP2198628 seal, WP2188918 coupling, WP8281164 screw, W10757851 electronic control
- Work performed: Installed a new auger drive shaft, seal, hub on the bottom of the ice bin and infrared ice level sensor
- Result: Ice maker resumed proper filling and dispensing operation
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Whirlpool refrigerator model is from their reliable side-by-side line and typically provides many years of service. Ice maker components do wear out over time, but replacing these parts is much more cost-effective than buying a new refrigerator. The electronic controls and mechanical components we installed should provide years of trouble-free ice production.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Replace water filters every 6 months or when the indicator light appears, not early unless water quality issues exist
- Clean the ice bin monthly to prevent buildup that can jam the auger mechanism
- Keep the freezer temperature at 0°F to prevent ice from forming in unwanted areas of the ice maker
