A Whirlpool refrigerator in Dover, OH was running warm despite showing correct temperatures on the front panel. The customer reported the fridge displaying 33 degrees but feeling more like 50 inside. Our diagnosis revealed a failed start device preventing the compressor from running properly.
The Problem
The customer called because their refrigerator was warm. The front panel displayed 33 degrees, but it felt more like 50 inside the refrigerator compartment.
Diagnosis
The compressor wasn’t running. After testing, we found the start relay wasn’t switching to the start circuit when the compressor would kick on. The LRA is 19 amps, but the compressor was pulling about 10 and just not taking off.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W10613606 — start device/overload
- Work performed: Replaced the start device and overload
- Result: The compressor kicked on immediately and was pulling less than 1.5 amps under load. All functions tested normal per manufacturer tech sheet.
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator is a solid mid-range model worth repairing. Start device failures are common and inexpensive fixes that can extend the appliance’s life significantly. With proper maintenance, this unit should provide many more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Keep condenser coils clean — vacuum or brush them every 6 months to prevent compressor strain
- Replace water filters every 6 months to maintain ice maker and water dispenser performance
- Check door seals regularly and clean with warm soapy water to maintain proper temperatures
