A GE washer in Salem, OH had a timer knob that wouldn’t latch or catch to start the washing cycle. The main large knob on the far right would just spin in place instead of engaging the wash settings. We found the timer had simply come loose and needed to be reattached.
The Problem
The customer reported that the main large knob to turn on the GE washing machine on the far right to pull & turn for settings Whites/Casuals/Dark Colors and also to Start the Cycle of machine doesn’t “latch/catch” no longer in order to Start the Washing Machine. The main knob just spins in place now. No one in the home seemed to know what happened, but it worked fine 2 days ago when last used.
Diagnosis
Upon inspection, we found that the timer mechanism had become detached from its mounting position. This prevented the timer knob from engaging properly with the internal switching mechanism, causing it to spin freely without activating the wash cycles.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None required
- Work performed: Reattached timer
- Result: Timer knob now properly latches and engages all wash cycle settings
Is It Worth Repairing?
GE washers like this GTWN3000M1WS model are generally reliable top-load units that can provide years of service with proper maintenance. Since this repair required no parts and addressed a simple mechanical issue, it was definitely worth fixing rather than replacing the entire machine.
Maintenance Tips for GE Washers
- Avoid over-gripping or forcing the timer knob when selecting cycles — gentle operation prevents internal wear
- Clean the control panel area regularly to prevent buildup that could interfere with knob operation
- Check that the washer is level to prevent excessive vibration that could loosen internal components
