A Canton homeowner called with a GE refrigerator that wasn’t cooling properly. The model DFE29JMDAES was running but not maintaining temperature in either compartment. Our diagnosis revealed both the evaporator and condenser fans had failed, cutting off the airflow needed for proper cooling.
The Problem
The refrigerator was running but not cooling effectively in either the fresh food or freezer sections. Both compartments were gradually warming up despite the compressor cycling normally. The customer noticed the issue developing over several days before calling for service.
Diagnosis
Testing revealed both cooling fans had failed simultaneously. The evaporator fan (WR60X26866) wasn’t circulating air over the cooling coils inside the freezer compartment, while the condenser fan (WR60X10358) wasn’t pulling air across the condenser coils underneath. Without proper airflow through both systems, the refrigerator couldn’t transfer heat effectively, causing the gradual temperature rise in both compartments.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WR60X10358 condenser fan motor and WR60X26866 evaporator fan motor
- Work performed: Removed old fan assemblies, installed new motors with proper wiring connections
- Result: Both fans operating correctly, temperatures returning to normal setpoints
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE French door model is built with decent reliability when properly maintained. Fan motor failures around the 8-10 year mark are common but repairable issues. Since the compressor and control systems were functioning normally, replacing the fans was the right call over replacement.
Maintenance Tips for GE Refrigerators
- Clean condenser coils underneath every 6 months — this GE model collects dust quickly in the coil area
- Check that nothing blocks the interior vents where the evaporator fan pushes cold air into the fresh food section
- Listen for unusual fan noises during normal operation — early detection prevents complete failure
