A customer in Massillon called about their GE dryer that would power on but wouldn’t start when the cycle button was pressed. When we opened up this GTD65EBSJ2WS model, we found a broken drive belt and worn idler components that had finally given out.
The Problem
The dryer would turn on and the control panel lit up normally, but pressing the start button produced no response. No drum rotation, no heat, no motor noise — just dead silence despite having power to the unit.
Diagnosis
With the top panel removed, the issue was immediately visible. The drive belt had snapped and was lying in pieces at the bottom of the cabinet. The idler pulley assembly showed significant wear, and both front drum bearing slides were worn down to bare metal. When the belt finally broke under tension, it likely took out the already-deteriorating idler components.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WE03X29897 drive belt, WE12X20395 idler pulley, WE3M51 and WE3M52 bearing slides
- Work performed: Removed drum, installed new belt routing, replaced worn idler assembly and front bearings
- Result: Full cycle test confirmed proper drum rotation, heating, and smooth operation
Is It Worth Repairing?
This GE model is a solid mid-range dryer, and belt/bearing repairs typically give you several more years of reliable service. The GTD65EBSJ2WS series holds up well when maintained properly, making this repair worthwhile for most households.
Maintenance Tips for GE Dryers
- Check the drive belt annually by looking through the lint filter opening — a loose or frayed belt needs immediate attention
- Keep the rear exhaust vent clear of lint buildup, which forces the motor to work harder and stresses the belt system
- Don’t overload the drum — GE recommends filling no more than 2/3 capacity to prevent excessive wear on drive components
