A Maytag washer in Minerva was stuck on the spin cycle and displaying a UL error code. When we opened it up, we found worn rotor components and bearing failure causing the motor positioning system to malfunction.
The Problem
The customer reported their MVWB725BW0 washer would start normally but get stuck during the spin cycle, displaying a UL code on the control panel. The washer wouldn’t advance to the drain cycle, leaving clothes soaking wet. This is typically a motor or drive system issue on these Maytag models.
Diagnosis
Testing revealed an F51 error code stored in the control board — this indicates rotor position sensor failure. The rotor showed visible wear marks where it interfaces with the stator, and the bearing kit had developed excessive play. When the rotor can’t maintain proper position, the control board can’t determine spin speed and throws the UL (unbalanced load) code as a safety measure.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W10435302 bearing kit, complete rotor and stator assembly
- Work performed: Removed old rotor/stator assembly, installed new bearing kit, replaced motor positioning components
- Result: Washer completed full cycle test with proper spin speeds and error codes cleared
Is It Worth Repairing?
This MVWB725BW0 is a solid mid-range Maytag that typically runs 10-12 years with proper care. The motor/drive system failure around year 5-7 is common but repairable. These washers are well-built otherwise, so replacing the worn components makes sense unless the unit is already showing other age-related issues.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag MVWB725BW0 Washers
- Check that the washer is level monthly — this model’s bearing system is sensitive to vibration from uneven installation
- Use HE detergent only and measure carefully — excess suds can cause the rotor position sensor to misread during spin
- Run the Clean Washer cycle monthly with Maytag washer cleaner to prevent buildup on the rotor assembly
