A North Canton homeowner called us when their Maytag washer’s agitator stopped working and the lid wouldn’t stay up properly. When we arrived, we found a worn thrust bearing assembly that had seized the agitator mechanism, plus damaged hinges that left the lid hanging loose.
The Problem
The customer reported that the washer would fill and drain but the agitator stayed completely still during the wash cycle. Additionally, the lid had come off one of its hinges and wouldn’t stay open when loading clothes. The washer was still operational but couldn’t properly agitate the clothes, making it essentially useless for cleaning.
Diagnosis
Removing the agitator revealed a completely seized thrust bearing assembly. These bearings support the agitator’s oscillating motion, and when they fail from wear and water exposure, the agitator locks up entirely. The lid hinges had also failed — one hinge pin had sheared off and the other was badly bent, causing the lid to sag and fall closed unexpectedly.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 12002213 — bearing kit with thrust bearing assembly, WP35-2045 — hinge pins (both sides), WP21352320 — drive belt, WP22004376 — motor springs
- Work performed: Disassembled agitator mechanism, installed new thrust bearing kit, replaced both lid hinge pins, and replaced drive belt and motor springs as preventive maintenance
- Result: Agitator now oscillates properly through full wash cycles, lid stays securely open when lifted
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Maytag PAV2300AWW is a solid top-load washer that typically lasts 15-20 years with proper maintenance. At this age, replacing the thrust bearing and hinges makes good financial sense since the transmission and motor are still in excellent condition. These models are built to be serviced rather than replaced.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Top-Load Washers
- Check the agitator’s movement monthly — it should oscillate freely when you spin it by hand with the washer empty
- Avoid overloading, which puts extra stress on the thrust bearing and can cause premature failure
- Lubricate lid hinges every six months with a drop of 3-in-1 oil to prevent binding and breakage
