A Whirlpool dishwasher in Akron started making loud grinding noises during operation. When we opened up the unit, we found debris had worked its way into the wash pump motor assembly, causing the impeller to bind and create the racket the homeowner was hearing.
The Problem
The customer reported their DU930PWSQ0 dishwasher was making loud, grinding noises whenever they started a wash cycle. The noise was loud enough to hear from other rooms and got worse as the cycle progressed. The dishwasher would still run through its cycles, but the sound was concerning enough that they stopped using it.
Diagnosis
After removing the lower dish rack and spray arm, we accessed the wash pump housing at the bottom of the tub. Inside the pump chamber, we found small food particles, broken glass fragments, and other debris that had bypassed the filter system. This debris was jamming the wash pump impeller, causing it to bind against the housing and create the grinding noise during operation.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: None required
- Work performed: Removed all debris from wash pump chamber, cleaned impeller and housing, reassembled pump access
- Result: Ran full wash cycle with normal operation and no noise
Is It Worth Repairing?
This DU930PWSQ0 is from Whirlpool’s built-in dishwasher line that typically runs 12-15 years with proper maintenance. Since this was a cleaning issue rather than a component failure, and the unit is otherwise functioning well, it’s definitely worth keeping. These models are solid performers when the pump stays clean.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Dishwashers
- Clean the bottom filter monthly by twisting it out and rinsing under hot water — the DU930PWSQ0 has a cylindrical filter that unscrews counterclockwise
- Scrape plates before loading but don’t pre-rinse completely — Whirlpool’s wash system needs some soil to work effectively
- Run an empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner every 3 months to remove mineral buildup from the wash pump and spray arms
