A customer in Uniontown called about their Whirlpool refrigerator’s water dispenser not working. The ice dispenser was fine, but no water would come out when they pressed the dispenser button. We found a failed water valve that needed replacement.
The Problem
The water dispenser had completely stopped working. When the customer pressed the water dispenser button, nothing happened — no water flow at all. The ice maker and ice dispenser were still functioning normally, which pointed to an issue with the water valve rather than a broader water line problem.
Diagnosis
The water valve is located in the back panel of this Whirlpool model and controls water flow to the dispenser. When we tested the valve electrically, it wasn’t opening when activated. The valve had failed internally — a common issue on refrigerators that see regular water dispenser use. The electrical connections were good, but the valve mechanism itself had stopped functioning.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: W11043013 — water valve
- Work performed: Removed back panel, disconnected water lines and electrical connections, installed new valve
- Result: Water dispenser now flows properly with good pressure and no leaks
Is It Worth Repairing?
The WRX735SDHZ is a solid Whirlpool side-by-side that typically runs 10-15 years with proper maintenance. A water valve replacement on a refrigerator that’s otherwise working well makes good sense. These models are built with serviceable components, and this repair should give you many more years of reliable operation.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Replace the water filter every 6 months to prevent valve damage from sediment buildup
- Check the water lines behind the refrigerator annually for any signs of wear or mineral deposits
- If your water dispenser starts flowing slowly, replace the filter before the valve gets damaged by restricted flow
