A customer in Alliance called about their Maytag refrigerator’s bottom freezer overflowing with ice. The MFF2558VEM10 was producing ice constantly, filling the freezer compartment and causing food storage problems. We found a failed main control board that couldn’t regulate the ice maker cycle properly.
The Problem
The bottom freezer was completely packed with ice, making it impossible to store frozen food. The ice maker wouldn’t stop running, and items that had partially defrosted would randomly refreeze. The control panel was also showing intermittent error codes, indicating the main control board was sending faulty signals throughout the refrigerator’s systems.
Diagnosis
The main control board had failed and was stuck sending continuous “make ice” signals to the ice maker assembly. This caused the water inlet valve to stay open longer than programmed, flooding the ice maker with excess water. The board’s temperature sensors were also malfunctioning, causing erratic defrost cycles that would refreeze already-thawed items.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10503278 — main control board assembly
- Parts replaced: WP67003753 — ice maker water inlet valve
- Work performed: Removed excess ice, disconnected power, replaced control board and water valve, recalibrated ice maker cycle timing
- Result: Ice maker now produces normal amounts on proper schedule, freezer maintains consistent temperature
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Maytag MFF2558VEM10 is a solid side-by-side model that typically runs 12-15 years with proper maintenance. The control board and water valve are common wear items on this series, and replacing them restores full functionality. Given the quality of Maytag’s construction on this model, repair makes financial sense unless the unit is approaching 15 years old.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag MFF2558VEM10 Refrigerators
- Replace the water filter every 6 months to prevent mineral buildup in the ice maker valve — this model uses filter UKF8001
- Clean the condenser coils underneath every 3 months, as this French door design runs the compressor harder than standard models
- Check the door seals monthly on both refrigerator doors — the MFF2558VEM10’s dual-door design puts extra stress on the gaskets
