A Kenmore refrigerator in Uniontown was pooling water in the produce drawers, creating a mess and threatening food spoilage. Our diagnosis revealed ice blocking the freezer drain — a common issue that prevents proper water flow during the defrost cycle.
The Problem
The customer reported water consistently collecting in the bottom of both produce drawers. Each time they emptied the drawers and dried them out, water would return within hours. This wasn’t a simple spill — the pooling happened even when the refrigerator sat undisturbed overnight.
Diagnosis
We found a solid ice blockage in the freezer drain tube. During normal defrost cycles, melted ice water should flow through this drain to an evaporation pan beneath the refrigerator. When ice blocks the drain, that water has nowhere to go except into the fresh food compartment, where it eventually settles in the lowest points — the produce drawers. The existing heat probe had failed, allowing ice to accumulate and completely seal the drain.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 819043 — heat probe assembly
- Work performed: Cleared ice blockage from drain tube, installed new heat probe, tested defrost cycle operation
- Result: Water now flows properly to evaporation pan, eliminating pooling in drawers
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Kenmore model is built on a solid platform and typically runs 12-15 years with proper maintenance. A drain blockage repair extends the life significantly compared to replacement cost. The heat probe is a wear item that prevents much more expensive compressor and evaporator damage if left unfixed.
Maintenance Tips for Kenmore Refrigerators
- Check freezer drain monthly — pour warm water down the drain tube to prevent ice buildup
- Keep freezer temperature at 0°F to ensure proper defrost cycles without overworking the heat probe
- Clean the evaporation pan annually — it’s located beneath the refrigerator and can develop mold if water sits too long
