A Samsung dryer in Canton, OH stopped producing heat on all cycles, leaving clothes damp after normal run times. Our diagnosis revealed a failed heating element and a worn idler pulley that was causing noise and affecting drum operation.
The Problem
The customer reported their Samsung DV42H5200EP/A3 dryer was running through complete cycles but not heating at all. Clothes came out damp regardless of the selected cycle or time setting. The dryer drum was also making unusual noises during operation.
Diagnosis
Testing confirmed 240V power at the terminal block, but the heating element showed an open circuit on continuity testing. The heating element assembly had failed internally, preventing heat generation. Additionally, the idler pulley was worn and wobbling, causing the operational noise the customer noticed. The combination of no heat and mechanical wear required addressing both components.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: DC97-14486A heating element assembly, DC93-00634A idler pulley
- Work performed: Removed rear panel, replaced failed heating element assembly, installed new idler pulley, verified proper belt tension and airflow
- Result: Full heat restoration on all cycles, quiet drum operation, normal dry times achieved
Is It Worth Repairing?
This 2014 Samsung model is at the age where heating element failure is common, but the overall build quality makes repair worthwhile. The DV42H5200EP series has solid mechanical components, and with the heating element and idler pulley replaced, this unit should provide several more years of reliable service.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load — Samsung dryers are particularly sensitive to restricted airflow
- Check the moisture sensor bars inside the drum monthly and wipe clean with rubbing alcohol to maintain accurate cycle detection
- Inspect the external vent hood quarterly — Samsung’s high-efficiency cycles can push more lint through the system
