We serviced a Samsung refrigerator on Poplar Avenue in Canton, OH where the freezer worked fine but the refrigerator compartment wouldn’t get cold enough. The customer reported temperatures fluctuating between 42-45 degrees despite being set to 34, with food staying notably lukewarm. Our diagnosis revealed a bent defrost heat strip that had moved out of position in the drain.
The Problem
The customer reported that their refrigerator freezer was working fine, but the refrigerator would not get cold enough. It was set at its lowest temperature at 34 degrees, but the actual temp reading fluctuated between 42 to 45. They tried using the “power cool” button, but it didn’t seem to have any effect, leaving food notably lukewarm.
Diagnosis
The heat strip that defrosts the drain in the refrigerator compartment was bent up out of the drain, preventing the defrost system from keeping the drain free. This disrupted proper drainage and cooling performance in the refrigerator section while leaving the freezer unaffected.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: DA61-06796A — Samsung fridge heat probe defrost clip drain evap
- Work performed: Replaced the bent defrost probe with a new updated version and cleared the rubber dust cap on the drain tube under the fridge
- Result: Proper defrost system function restored, allowing normal refrigerator compartment cooling
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung refrigerators from this era are generally worth repairing, especially for a relatively minor component like a defrost probe. This RF26HFENDSR model is well-built and this type of repair typically provides years of continued reliable service. The defrost system components are straightforward to replace and significantly less expensive than refrigerator replacement.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Refrigerators
- Check and clean the drain tube area periodically to prevent debris buildup that could affect defrost performance
- Monitor temperature readings regularly — Samsung’s digital displays help you catch cooling issues early
- Keep door seals clean and inspect for proper closure to maintain consistent temperatures in both compartments
