A Samsung refrigerator in Canton, OH wasn’t cooling in the fridge section and was making a noise like the fan was hitting something. We found the evaporator fan and coil heavily frosted and frozen over — a common defrost system failure that prevents proper cooling.
The Problem
The customer reported that their Samsung refrigerator was not cooling in the fridge and was making a noise like the fan was hitting something. This combination of symptoms typically points to ice buildup in the evaporator section.
Diagnosis
I found the evaporator fan and coil heavily frosted and frozen over. The ice accumulation was blocking the fan and preventing proper airflow, which explained both the cooling failure and the unusual noise the customer heard.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: DA97-12609B (evaporator cover assembly), DA82-01415A (water leakage assembly), DA32-10104N (temperature sensor)
- Work performed: After clearing the ice, I replaced the evaporator cover, the defrost sensor, the evaporator defrost drain heat probe and the drain tubes in the bottom. I was also able to extend the defrost time through the programming.
- Result: The refrigerator resumed normal cooling operation without the fan noise
Is It Worth Repairing?
Samsung refrigerators are generally worth repairing when defrost components fail, especially on models like this RF series. The repair addresses multiple defrost system components to prevent future ice buildup, making it a solid investment for continued reliable operation.
Maintenance Tips for Samsung Refrigerators
- Keep door seals clean and check for proper closure — poor seals can overwork the defrost system
- Don’t overpack the refrigerator section as blocked vents can cause uneven temperatures
- Clean the condenser coils every 6 months to maintain efficient cooling and reduce strain on defrost components
