A Whirlpool dryer in Massillon wasn’t producing any heat, though everything else seemed to work fine. Our diagnostic revealed failed heating components that needed replacement to restore proper drying function.
The Problem
The customer reported no heat from their Whirlpool dryer. Everything else seemed to work fine — the drum turned, the controls responded, and the unit ran through cycles, but clothes weren’t drying because no heat was being generated.
Diagnosis
Testing the heating circuit revealed two failed components. The heating element had burned out, preventing heat generation, and the thermal fuse had blown, which is a safety device that cuts power to the heating system when temperatures get too high. When one component fails, it often takes the other with it.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WP3392519 thermal fuse, 279838 heating element
- Work performed: Replaced the heat element and thermal fuse
- Result: Dryer restored to full heating operation
Is It Worth Repairing?
Whirlpool dryers are solid mid-range appliances that typically provide good value for repair investment. Heating element failures are common and relatively affordable to fix. Unless the unit is over 12-15 years old or showing multiple system problems, this repair makes financial sense.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load — restricted airflow causes heating elements to overheat and fail
- Check and clean the exhaust vent annually to prevent thermal fuse trips from poor ventilation
- Don’t overload the drum, which forces the heating system to work harder than designed
