A Canton homeowner called about their Maytag dryer that only heated on the highest setting. The lower heat settings weren’t drying clothes properly, leaving them damp after full cycles.
The Problem
The customer reported that their dryer only heats on highest setting and lower heat settings do not dry. This left clothes partially wet even after running complete drying cycles on normal or delicate settings.
Diagnosis
Unable to replicate issue today. Timer is operating properly, heater looks good. Heater cycles on and off when cycling temp selector switch. The symptoms point to an intermittent control board failure that wasn’t acting up during our service call.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: No parts replaced
- Work performed: Diagnostic testing of timer, heater element, and temperature selector switch
- Result: All components tested normally during visit, but likely looking at control board failure
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Maytag dryer model is generally reliable and worth repairing when the main components are still in good condition. Control board failures are common on electric dryers and typically more cost-effective to fix than replacing the entire unit, especially if the drum, motor, and heating element are functioning properly.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Dryers
- Clean the lint filter after every load to prevent overheating that can damage control boards
- Check the exhaust vent annually for blockages that force the dryer to work harder
- Avoid overloading the drum, which can strain the motor and electrical components
