A Maytag refrigerator on Union Ave in Homeworth, OH was making limited ice after a recent icemaker replacement. The customer reported the unit “made one batch of ice only” since the new icemaker was installed. Our diagnosis revealed a failed water valve that was likely damaged when the original icemaker shorted out.
The Problem
The customer’s Maytag refrigerator made one batch of ice only after having the icemaker replaced the previous week. Despite the new icemaker installation, ice production had essentially stopped.
Diagnosis
Helen made ice since I replaced the icemaker last week. Found water valve coil open. For your temperature is warm. Around 15 to 20 on that wall. It’s possible it came out of defrost recently. I left my thermometer in there. She’ll check temperatures later this evening and tomorrow morning.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: WPW10498976 — Valve
- Work performed: Replace valve
- Result: Unit filled and cycled. Good to go.
It’s likely that when the previous icemaker failed, it shorted the old valve out. It possibly reconnected just briefly when it cooled. Just long enough to half fill the icemaker after replacing the icemaker.
Is It Worth Repairing?
This Maytag refrigerator is worth repairing. The MFF2558VEW7 is a reliable side-by-side model, and a water valve replacement is a straightforward fix that should provide years of continued service. Maytag refrigerators typically have good longevity when properly maintained.
Maintenance Tips for Maytag Refrigerators
- Replace the water filter every 6 months to prevent mineral buildup in the water system
- Keep the condenser coils clean — vacuum them every 3-4 months to maintain efficiency
- Monitor ice production patterns — sudden changes often indicate water system issues
