Whirlpool Washer Repair (Model WTW5000DW2) – Magnolia, OH

A customer in Magnolia called about their Whirlpool washer leaving clothes soaking wet after the spin cycle. We diagnosed a failed wash basket hub — the critical component that connects the agitator to the transmission and drives the spinning action.

The Problem

The washer would fill, wash, and drain normally, but clothes came out dripping wet. The spin cycle wasn’t extracting water properly, leaving laundry loads requiring extra time in the dryer or hand-wringing before hanging.

Diagnosis

We removed the agitator and found the wash basket hub had stripped its internal splines. This plastic component transfers rotational force from the agitator shaft to the wash basket during the spin cycle. When the splines wear down or break, the basket can’t achieve the high RPM needed for proper water extraction.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: W10528947 — wash basket hub assembly
  • Work performed: Removed agitator, extracted failed hub, installed new hub with proper torque specifications
  • Result: Spin cycle restored to full RPM, clothes came out with normal moisture content

Is It Worth Repairing?

The WTW5000DW2 is a solid mid-range Whirlpool model from their Cabrio line. Hub failures are common on these units around the 5-7 year mark, but the repair typically extends life another 5+ years. Unless the transmission or motor has issues, this repair makes good financial sense.

Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Top-Load Washers

  • Don’t overload the basket — Whirlpool’s load sensing works best with proper load distribution
  • Use HE detergent only — regular detergent creates excess suds that stress the hub and transmission
  • Run a cleaning cycle monthly with Whirlpool’s Affresh tablets to prevent buildup on internal components
