Whirlpool Washer Repair (Model WFW9400SU01) – Canton, OH

A Canton homeowner called about their Whirlpool front-load washer that wouldn’t drain completely after cycles. When we arrived, we found standing water in the drum and a severely clogged drain filter that had been neglected for years.

The Problem

The customer reported that their WFW9400SU01 washer was leaving clothes soaking wet and water pooling in the bottom of the drum. The final spin cycle would run, but water wasn’t being pumped out properly. This had been getting progressively worse over several weeks.

Diagnosis

Opening the drain filter access panel at the bottom front of the unit revealed the root cause — the filter was completely packed with lint, hair, and debris. This blockage was preventing proper drainage and had caused the drain pump to work overtime, ultimately burning out the pump motor. The pump housing also showed signs of strain from trying to push water through the clogged system.

The Repair

  • Parts replaced: 280187 — drain pump assembly
  • Work performed: Thoroughly cleaned drain filter, replaced failed pump, tested all drain hoses for additional blockages
  • Result: Ran complete wash cycle with proper drainage and verified spin speeds

Is It Worth Repairing?

This 2018 Whirlpool front-loader still has several good years ahead with proper maintenance. The WFW9400SU series is known for solid construction, and drain pump replacement is a common repair that extends the machine’s life significantly. Much more economical than replacement for a unit this age.

Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Front-Load Washers

  • Clean the drain filter monthly — it’s behind the small door at bottom left, twist counterclockwise to remove
  • Leave the door and detergent drawer open after use to prevent mold and odors in the drum and seals
  • Run the “Clean Washer” cycle monthly with Whirlpool’s Affresh tablets or plain white vinegar
