A North Canton homeowner called about water leaking from under the left front side of their Whirlpool IMPERIAL SERIES refrigerator. When we arrived, we found significant ice buildup in the freezer compartment blocking the drain line.
The Problem
The customer reported water pooling on the kitchen floor, coming from underneath the refrigerator’s left front corner. This wasn’t a small drip — enough water was accumulating to create a slip hazard and potential damage to the flooring.
Diagnosis
Opening the freezer compartment revealed heavy ice buildup that had completely blocked the drain line. When defrost water couldn’t flow through the normal drainage path, it was backing up and leaking out the front of the unit. The existing drain system needed both clearing and a heat probe installation to prevent future freeze-ups in this location.
The Repair
- Parts replaced: 819043 — heat probe assembly
- Work performed: Defrosted ice buildup, cleared drain line, installed heat probe to maintain proper drainage
- Result: No leaks detected, proper drainage restored, freezer maintaining correct temperature
Is It Worth Repairing?
The IMPERIAL SERIES was a solid mid-range line from Whirlpool, and drainage issues like this are typically very repairable. Unless the unit is showing multiple system failures or the compressor is failing, a drain repair usually extends the life significantly. This particular model should give several more years of reliable service with proper maintenance.
Maintenance Tips for Whirlpool Refrigerators
- Check the drain hole in the back wall of the refrigerator section monthly — flush with warm water if you see buildup
- Keep the freezer compartment organized so air can circulate freely around the drain area
- If you notice frost building up faster than normal, check that door seals are clean and sealing properly
